Electric Cars are Insanely Great
Published: June 27, 2012
Having saved hundreds of dollars and largely eliminated any pollution, our new Chevy Volt electric (with a backup gasoline generator) car, is proving to be insanely great.

A few months ago we bought a Chevy Volt for about thirty four thousand Canadian at a local dealer. We use the car each day to drive to the local transit train. The car charges overnight on a standard 110 volt outdoor outlet that we've always had in the car port. Each morning the car is fully charged and ready to go. The electricity, from Bullfrog Power, a green renewable electricity retailer in Canada, costs about a dollar a day. We rarely need to fill up the gasoline tank for the on-board generator.

Most people seem to have the misconception that the Chevy Volt is entirely electric. That is not the case. It also has an gasoline engine used as a generator for charging the batteries when charge levels drop to approximately 40% of remaining stored energy. Most days we are able to go about 70 kilometers on pure electric. When we need it the gasoline generator kicks in to keep the batteries at 40% charge so that we always are drive by the electric motors (yes, it has two, one for slow speed and one for high speeds, the low speed one also providing re-generative breaking/costing capabilities).

For both long distance and daily commuting the Chevy Volt is a great car. The dollar savings for us, as well as the knowledge that we aren't polluting the environment, make this the most affordable car we could find on the market. As for the fact that we run essentially entirely pollution free, well, for our kids future and the health of planet earth, we see a lot of hope in that. There is a choice and it is comfortable, practical and affordable.

Driving a Chevy Volt is like driving a regular car only better, in fact insanely better. Think about it, for about the same price as any other car, you can drive more quietly, spend a lot less on gas, fill up less, much less, pollute less, maintain less, and still do whatever you would normally do in any car. Time to make the switch to electric. Go visit a Chevy, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford, Toyota, Tesla or any one of the growing list of major manufacturers that now has an electric vehicle that you can order today.
